With the formation of the charitable company to purchase and save the radio station, we were concentrating on getting a purchase agreement signed with BT prior to expanding our management team and volunteer base.

Although it would be nice to pay one hundred pounds to get a delapidated building with repair costs estimated to exceed £500,000, we have advised BT representatives we are willing to discuss an independant market valuation.  BT rejects this approach.  Why does BT want more money than the site is worth?  It will be interesting to ask Sir Mike Rake, BT Chairman, how this situation sits with their public facing policies.  Sir Mike is probably not aware he is responsible for a heritage maritime radio station in Scotland.  Although BT estate management talk about maximising shareholder value the reality is that the maintenance costs so far have probably exceeded the site value.

We now ask for more residents and interested persons to come forward and work with us to provide facilities for our community.   If you have some time, ideas and community spirit please send us a message via the contact page.

We would also to hear your views on restoration of the radio station site and especially your thoughts on any community use which can be considered.

Good news folks, we have found Brian Faulkner.  Brian was the author of “Watchers of the Waves – History of the Maritime Coast Radio Stations in Britain”.  He is interested in revising his book to include details of the outcome of the coastal radio service buildings and facilities.  The most well known maritime radio station - Portishead Radio - was demolished and a residential home was built on the site.

We were looking forward to discussions with Shonaig Macpherson -Chair of BT Scotland - about our plans for the redundant Stonehaven Maritime Radio Station.  Shonaig, who is also Chair of the National Trust for Scotland, obviously also shares an interest in heritage.  We have asked Alan Bonas, Head of communications BT Scotland - to advise Shonaig of our interest.

Speaking about history, Baron Reith - first director general of the BBC - was born in Stonehaven and we hope to mark his memory in some manner on our site.  If any television / radio producers read this page then we would be interested to participate in any new programmes.
